You may continue your health insurance when you retire. However, if you or your dependent are age 65 or over at the time of retirement, your health insurance coverage will convert to a supplemental health plan to Medicare. What this means is that the state plan will become the secondary payor and Medicare will become the primary coverage. You should contact Social Security Administration to purchase Medicare Part B, which will cover approximately 80 percent. The state health plan offered will only be responsible for 20 percent of the coverage. If you or your dependent are less than 65, the health plan will continue to provide full coverage. Both Medicare and the state health plan have deductibles and co-payment provisions. For more information, please call University Retirement at (352) 392-2477, SC 622-2477, or visit our Web Site.

If you are enrolled in the Florida Retirement System (FRS), you will receive regular service credit for each month that you are on sabbatical. However, if your sabbatical is half time this may not be one of your highest five years used for pension calculation. For faculty enrolled in the Optional Retirement Program (SUSORP), the university will continue to contribute the approved retirement percentage, currently 10.32 percent, based on salary paid during the period of the sabbatical.

Employees, regardless of age, should begin planning for the future when beginning their work career. This includes participating in the employer’s pension plan and taking advantage of any other supplemental retirement programs (tax-sheltered annuities) that the employer may offer. The university offers tax-sheltered annuity plans that the employee may enroll in and voluntarily have money deducted from their paycheck. The money is invested by the annuity company and any money deducted from the paycheck and interest earned will be tax deferred until the money is withdrawn from the account. For additional information, please contact the University Retirement Office at (352) 392-2477.
