What are my rights during a probationary period?

As a probationary employee, you enjoy many of the rights conferred upon employees with permanent status. As appropriate based on individual circumstances, you have the right to:

  • Accrue and use annual leave, sick leave, and compensatory leave
  • Enroll in various insurances
  • Apply for vacant positions within your current department, center, or unit
  • Participate in staff development programs offered by University Personnel Services
  • Consult with the Employee Assistance Program

Other benefits, as appropriate, include:

  • Paid administrative leave
  • Salary payment at least at the minimum of the pay range assigned to your position
  • Paid holidays
  • Tuition fee waiver
  • Nomination for awards and bonuses
  • Special pay increases

In addition, as a probationary employee, you are covered by workers’ compensation and the Family and Medical Leave Act.
