It is strongly encouraged that employees anticipating the birth of a child to change to family coverage as soon as they become aware of the pregnancy. However, if individual coverage is in effect at the time of the baby’s birth, you will have 60 days from the birth of the child to enroll in family coverage. The effective date of coverage will be retroactive to the beginning of the month in which the child is born and premiums will be due accordingly.

No paychecks are held back. However, various factors may delay the employee receiving his or her first check. For example, the department may not be timely in completing payroll sign-up, or the appointment might be submitted immediately after a payroll closing deadline. However, the employee will receive all the pay he or she has earned and will “catch up” and be current with other employees in the payroll cycle. Please also note that the payday is usually the Friday of the week after the time card end date. This is not a hold back of pay, rather it is just the time it takes to process the payroll.

You may continue your health insurance when you retire. However, if you or your dependent are age 65 or over at the time of retirement, your health insurance coverage will convert to a supplemental health plan to Medicare. What this means is that the state plan will become the secondary payor and Medicare will become the primary coverage. You should contact Social Security Administration to purchase Medicare Part B, which will cover approximately 80 percent. The state health plan offered will only be responsible for 20 percent of the coverage. If you or your dependent are less than 65, the health plan will continue to provide full coverage. Both Medicare and the state health plan have deductibles and co-payment provisions. For more information, please call University Retirement at (352) 392-2477, SC 622-2477, or visit our Web Site.
